Whole Lotta Poker Going On – WSOP Sets Up Shop at Harrah’s Cherokee

First thing’s first – let’s get to the record setting poker event in Cherokee, North Carolina. Atlanta Poker News was at Harrah’s Cherokee to witness the festivities, mingle with participants (like Shane and Shannon from Interstate Poker Club) and organizers (thank you Nolan Dalla – WSOP – and James Bradley – Harrah’s Cherokee) and learn more about the first, signature poker event held in North Carolina.

According to an article published in the Cherokee One Feather, “the noon event (on Saturday, April 6) set a new record for the largest poker tournament ever played in the South.  A staggering 1,315 players flowed into the Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort Event Center.”

Demand and attendance exceeded all expectations according to a Harrah’s Cherokee spokesperson. Through Saturday, each day of the event has set a new record for poker players and attendees at the WSOP event.

The lines for poker buy-ins at the casino resembled concert ticket lines – wrapping around the state-of-the-art facility. The capacity-filled Poker Room at Harrah’s was buzzing with poker aficionados and an hour-plus wait for a seat at electronic or live tables.

The scene inside the EventCenter was Poker Mecca. Even during breaks in the action – for dinner – poker enthusiasts carried on with their five-card mayhem around the casino. The trance-like hum of the poker chips may have lulled spectators into distraction, but these players were all business.

This has been a warm up for the headliners in Cherokee – Event #10A: No-Limit Hold’em Main Event. According to the Asheville Citizen Times, the Harrah’s Cherokee buy-in averaged between $300 and $1,500. The main event boasts a buy in on $1,675, and the action kicked off earlier today.

The event is being held in the newly renovated and expanded resort, which celebrated its official Grand Opening on March 23rd.

Hotel rooms are nearly impossible to find at Harrah’s Cherokee, but there are still rooms available on the outskirts of town.

For poker players within a comfortable drive, a day-trip is another option. A crew from Atlanta Poker News made the round-trip from Atlanta to Cherokee with no incidents. Just watch your speed going through the mountains – particularly at night!

Not only has Cherokee kicked off the first WSOP event in its history, but the Seminole Hard Rock in Tampa is also joining the party with the WPT Showdown, running through April 16th. While the 2013 WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown is reaching its own fever pitch down in Tampa, the Cherokee event is the Zeppelin headliner for the groupies at Atlanta Poker News.
